On May 12 2009 Sylvie Joussaume presented ENES and IS-ENES at the Symposium of DEISA and PRACE held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Her presentation covered the challenges faced in Earth System Modeling, and the expectations of our community w.r.t. both DEISA and PRACE.

At the symposium a lot of concern was felt about the readiness of codes for the large numbers of processors or threads the next generation supercomputers will be providing. Such systems - dubbed "Exascale Systems" - are expected for the 2017 - 2020 time frame. From the symposium we had the impression that large parts of the HPC community seem to be convinced a complete redesign of applications has to take place in order to cope with millions of heterogeneous processors, as they are expected for these systems.
